ORC: Week 2 x The Plan & The Flush

Hello again!

Thanks for joining me as I flush through the One Room Challenge virtual design of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, aka AOC! In case you missed it, I’ll be taking you along as I showcase the design process of how I work through my thoughts to create a unique space for my clients.

Last week’s post introduced the challenge and my virtual client, and this week we’re getting into how I begin working through my floor plan and ideal features for the space.

Design Direction:

Early on in the design phase, I pull a series of images that speak to an overall feel I would like for the space. These images range from textures, to materials to actual spaces. I aim was to pull photographs that felt “feminine, yet bold” and “sophisticated, without being too pretentious”.

My conceptual images board is uploaded, below. I’m finding that soft spaces in a neutral palette, are the best way to push the feminine edge without becoming too girly. What do you think?

After inspiring myself with an overall “vibe”, I opened up AutoCAD to further flush out my sketches. Sometimes, I have an idea of what I would like to achieve, but it doesn’t quite shake out to be fully functional enough for my comfort. Take a look at last week’s post for the sketch concept, and then review the floor plan, below. Notice any changes?

If you’ve ever been to Washington D.C., you’ve probably fell in love with the architecture associated with areas like Georgetown - one of my personal faves. I decided to implement a nod to “DC” by incorporating columns into my design. How sweet would those be?!

I also further toyed with the idea of the flooring becoming a strong(er) design element, further dictating area-use/function, and potentially making my palette more stable.

The open area behind AOC’s desk is throwing me slightly, and I’m wondering what kind of tricks I have in my sleeve to fill in the space, without it feeling like such a waste. All part of the process! Suggesting ideas (to myself - ha), and then knocking them down.

You can follow along with me this week on Instagram as I walk through my CAD process within my stories, and be sure to follow along with my fellow One Room Challenge friends, below!
